Nursing Practice Domains within Performance Sport Nursing

Primary Health Care

1.1.     Perform broad comprehensive and focused health assessment.

1.2.     Perform baseline athlete health and welfare screening and assessment.

1.3.     Provide direct patient care and treatment of minor illness and injury.

1.4.     Provide preventive care including vaccinations, ongoing health monitoring and health education.

1.5.     Lead the provision of wound care and management including pressure area care.

1.6.     Provide care coordination and continuity through interdisciplinary collaboration.

1.7.     Provide advocacy and social support including healthcare system navigation and access to necessary resources and services.

1.8.     Providing cultural competency and patient centred care while ensuring that care is appropriate and acceptable for diverse populations.

Emergency Care

2.1. Provide rapid assessment and emergency care including advanced life support within both clinical and sporting environments.

2.2. Undertake detailed secondary surveys and associated assessments.

2.3. Undertake head injury and concussion assessment and management.

2.4. Provide safe and effective immobilisation, C spine protection and extraction.

2.5. Provide urgent/ emergency care treatments within their scope of practice.

2.6. Provide triaging where required and coordinate emergency care services.

2.7. Undertake relevant documentation and incident reporting procedures.

Injury Prevention, Management and Recovery within a Multidisciplinary Team.

3.1. Assist with injury prevention through health education, health screening and risk assessment and management.

3.2. Assist the multidisciplinary team with recovery and rehabilitation through recovery monitoring, health promotion, rehabilitation coordination and support.

3.3. Provide emotional and psychological support while motivating adherence to recovery plans.

3.4. Assist with the prevention of re-injury through education and return to sport planning

Mental Health and Welfare

4.1. Foster safe care environments by ensuring physical and psychological safety, with particular attention to mental health challenges affecting athletes, while delivering supportive and holistic care.

4.2. Provide mental health assessments and interventions including screening, comprehensive physical and risk assessments.

4.3. Provide crisis intervention including immediate care, de-escalation, suicide and or self-harm prevention.

4.4. Liaise with mental health professionals and the multidisciplinary team to provide continuation of psychosocial support and counselling.

4.5. Provide health promotion and education through stigma reduction, promoting mental and physical wellness and educating athletes, families, coaching and support team members.

4.6. Provide advocacy and empowerment in the provision of safe and confidential care.

4.7. Assist in selection, preparation and management of athlete treatment space to help ensure basic athlete welfare including environmental protection, hydration and nutrition.

Infection Control

5.1. Undertake infectious disease control including monitoring, prevention, point of care testing and outbreak management.

5.2. Coordination and management of local vaccination schedules and associated management and governance policies.

5.3. Development, implementation and monitoring of infection control policies including cleaning, disinfection, sterilisation and clinical waste management.

5.4. Undertake surveillance and reporting of infections.

5.5. Promotion and monitoring of standard precautions including hand hygiene, and personal protective equipment.

5.6. Undertake infection control training and leadership through staff education and training, leadership in infection control programs and continuing education.

Logistics and Travel

6.1. Undertake pre-travel health assessments and preparation through health screenings and vaccinations, travel health education, travel health kits and mental health preparation.

6.2. Provide medical and health support during travel through direct and on call medical support, emergency preparedness, travel safety monitoring, medication administration and management and infection control.

6.3. Provide team logistics and coordination through coordination of medical supplies, communication and documentation, logistical support for medical evacuation.

6.4. Provide cultural sensitivity and local health integration through cultural awareness preparedness and local health system integration.

6.5. Provide post travel health monitoring and support through health monitoring post travel, follow-up care and mental health support post travel.

6.6. Provide infectious disease prevention and management through preventing the spread of infectious diseases including point of care testing, implementation and management of quarantine and isolation procedures.

6.7. Provide medical evacuation logistics through emergency planning and accompanying medical evacuations.

Governance

7.1. Support the development of health and injury prevention policy at the local, national, and international level.

7.2. Support local, national and international polices promoting in integrity within sport including anti-doping and safeguarding of children & vulnerable people.

7.3. Provide ethical oversight through advocating for athlete safety, self-care, health and welfare.

7.4. Support inclusion and equity for athletes with disabilities or from marginalised communities and promoting gender equity in sports health.

7.5. Undertake research and data analysis surrounding health, safety and welfare trends among athletes.

Education

8.1. Deliver education within areas of nursing expertise to athletes, with the aim of promoting their health, safeguarding their welfare, and ensuring their safety.

8.2. Provide education to other healthcare professionals in areas of nursing expertise to enhance interdisciplinary understanding, collaboration, and the delivery of comprehensive athlete care

8.3. Contribute to the professional and educational development of nurses working in, or aspiring to enter, the high-performance sport environment.
